Rag and Pulp Binding

Petrina Bryce

As I looked through “Rag & Pulp” for inspiration on my design, I was drawn to the beautiful origami and handmade papers created by various artists. I wanted an overall sleek look with clean lines for this binding and chose to showcase a paper crane, which is always the first image that comes to mind when I think of origami. For the binding structure, I chose to do a simple round back case binding. I used some lovely handmade paper with blue onion leaf inclusions for the cover and as paste downs inside the book. To warm up the cool tones of this design, I applied gold foil on the cover and my own handmade flax paper as end sheets. I backed navy book cloth for the cover and sewed French double headbands as a nice finishing touch to tie in all the colors used in this binding.

Materials:

handmade book cloth, handmade decorative paper and flax paper end sheets, Japanese silk threads, and gold foil
