I was trilled to be nominated to participate in this binding adventure of ‘Rag and Pulp.’ Thank you Laura. Thank you to Todd for his insights and direction in this project.
I have always had a passion for pen, paper and books. My experience began with calligraphy using wonderful, unique papers and this journey led to bookbinding. I love trying new bindings, new papers and new materials.
The binding I chose for this project is a single needle Coptic binding combined with a Long Stitch binding. I added a weave to the long stitch to enhance the look of the spine. The covers are St. Armand Canal paper. The spine wraps and fly leaves are St. Armand Pastel paper. (Papeterie St. Armand, Quebec Canada) I especially like the way a Coptic bound book lays flat to see all the page and for writing or painting in.
To quote Janine Vangool in the introduction of Rag and Pulp;
‘……paper is integral to everything we make, it serves as the foundation of our ideas.’
This sparked me to incorporate my own handmade papers. Sadly my ‘stash’ has dwindled to next to nothing. I salvaged enough to make a small ‘paper bundle’ of varied papers for the front cover.
I enjoyed this project immensely and am thankful to be part of the ‘Rag and Pulp Binders.’
